The 3 Titans of Skincare - Methylene Blue, Peptides and Growth Factors

(Part I)

At Mblue Labs, we focus on applying Methylene Blue (MB), our patented super-antioxidant, in Bluelene products to preserve and restore our customers' skin health and longevity. At the same time, we are constantly looking for cutting-edge, new ingredients that synergistically function with our anti-aging superstar. We heard you when you asked for a product that prevents and smooths neck and face wrinkles.

Our latest research led us to create the powerhouse combination of Methylene Blue with Peptides and Growth Factors. Watch for the premier in our newest product - Bluelene’s Face & Neck Remodel Mask!

But first, here is more about the science behind the first cutting edge ingredient – Peptides:

Why are Peptides important in Skincare?

Peptides, consisting of two or more amino acids linked in a chain, represent a remarkable turning point in the world of skincare. Amino acids are crucial for almost every biological process in our bodies. They serve as the structural units that form proteins, such as collagen and elastin, which provide our skin with firmness and elasticity.  Peptides are small enough to penetrate the skin's surface and carry out their signaling function to the skin cells to produce more collagen and elastin, boosting the skin's self-rejuvenation process.

There are different types of peptides, each with varying structures and functions. Copper peptides, for instance, are known for their wound healing and anti-inflammatory effects. Neuropeptides function by interacting with neurotransmitters in the skin to keep the muscles relaxed, thereby reducing the appearance of wrinkles. Carrier peptides deliver essential trace elements to the skin to help with various enzymatic processes. Signal Peptides send signals to skin cells to produce more collagen and other Extracellular Matrix (ECM )proteins by upregulating the six main constituents of the skin matrix (collagen I, III, IV, fibronectin, hyaluronic acid, laminin, and collagen VI). The ECM controls cell behavior, including migration, survival, differentiation, contraction, the transmission of forces, and the expression of specific genes.

Why is Methylene Blue a Break-through for Skincare?

MB, our patented antioxidant, was discovered by Dr. Kan Cao, founder of the Mblue Labs. MB is a highly soluble molecule that effectively combats free radicals (ROS) in all compartments in our skin, from mitochondria to the cell nucleus and ECM. Free radicals lead to DNA damage and mutations, poor energy production, decreased ECM synthesis, and increased ECM breakdown. By neutralizing ROS,  MB increases the lifespan of our skin cells and improves skin cell overall health while reducing cell stress. MB treatment promotes the wound healing process and facilitates healing by reducing the antimicrobial burden.

In our recent study published in Nature Scientific Reports, when MB was compared with other antioxidants used in skincare, including vitamin C and retinol (vitamin A), MB-treated skin cells outperformed both of them significantly in terms of promoting cell proliferation and reducing age-related markers (https://www.nature.com/articles/s41598-021-89970-2).

In addition to its potent antioxidant function, MB treatment on skin fibroblast cells stimulates the expression of ECM proteins, including upregulation of elastin and collagen 2A1, the two vital proteins for healthy, youthful skin (https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/28559565/). Another study showed that MB provides broad-spectrum absorption of UV rays and mitigates DNA double-strand breaks caused by UVB radiation, which means that MB in daily skincare effectively delays photoaging (https://www.nature.com/articles/s41598-021-89970-2).

How does  Methylene Blue work with Peptides?

The MB + Peptides combination allows them to work on the skin’s cellular structure in different, but complimentary ways. When peptides join MB, they assist in boosting more ECM production, smoothing out skin tone, and promoting a more even complexion. This combination can particularly benefit individuals with age spots or sun damage. The cumulative effects of MB and peptides can lead to long-term improvements in skin health. The protection from environmental damage, increased collagen production, and improved skin tone all contribute to a more youthful and vibrant appearance.
